About The Artist
Frederick J. Ploughman is a local sculptor and painter whose intricate knowledge of marine life emerged after decades of working in the field of whale watching and participating in missions to rescue whales entangled in fishermen’s nets. He started at the early age of eight, shaping seals out of bars of Sunlight soap, eventually switching to hardwood sculptures as he grew older and became more skilled at his craft. After years of working with wood, he moved on to casting sea life creatures in aluminum and, finally, to casting whales from two-part resin using molds he makes himself. Once cast, all pieces are hand-painted, making each one a singular piece of art. The exemplary craftsmanship speaks for itself and has been recognized by others for its detailed form and distinctive styling.
In 1994, he started his own company, Sealife Sculptures. In that same year, Fred was chosen by a group of Canadian companies presenting unique products to go to Osaka, Japan, to attend an international trade show. There, he had the opportunity to showcase his work and establish himself as a premier artist in his field, using that momentum to gain commercial success and to continue to this day to produce art that he loves to create.
